Be pragmatic (it doesn't matter if the cat is black or white as long as it catches mice)

There will always be cutting-edge cases, or a way to make something perfect but, if you're building something that could use a component that already exists, avoid the urge to re-invent it. If you're a taxi company then investing your resources into making the perfect tyre will not help your business (as it's largely an invisible sub-system so the customer doesn't care about this). Always challenge when you are about to depart from using something that already exists. The old adage of "It doesn't matter if the cat is black or white as long as it catches mice" is relevant here.

You should focus on the things that matter (like continuous improvements or cost reduction) but recognise that there is no one-size fits all approach. You may also have to maintain existing systems whilst acknowledging the future will require a fundamentally different approach. You will need to be pragmatic to achieve change and recognise that this is more important than ideology.
