Is DeepSeek a 'Sputnik Moment'?

Everyone has heard about DeepSeek now — the “Chinese chatGPT” that’s much, much cheaper and open source. Is this a game-changer?

On the simplified Wardley Map here you can see that users (essentially all of us) were looking to do things cheaper, faster and better and for that we were enticed by the lure of “AI” — most prominently, ChatGPT.
ChatGPT uses lots of very expensive Nvidia chips to power this ‘AI revolution’ but the owner, OpenAI (oh, the irony) charged us to use their latest models and restricted those models to ‘friendly countries’ only.

But now, DeepSeek has created something just as good for a fraction of the cost AND opened it up to all of us — everywhere — to use, free of charge, however we like, even on our local computers.

Why does this matter? Well, there’s been a huge gap between the hype about AI for and the reality of what we can actually using it for. But that’s about to change.

DeepSeek is now an industrialised component (bottom right of the map) provided as a utility service — meaning everyone can use it as there are almost no barriers to usage (we still need computing and electricity).

Now, the difference between tens of thousands of people experimenting with AI and hundreds of millions is vast. We’re about to start discovering a whole new world of activities and practices for doing EVERYTHING.

Want to start doing things cheaper, faster and better? You ain’t seen nothing yet. The innovations will start coming thick and fast, from everywhere. The disruption to current industries is going to immense.

Want a taster of just how much disruption is coming? Take a look at Nvidia’s share price today and the overall Nasdaq. But don’t fall into the trap of thinking it’s only affecting them and not coming for you.

However, never forget that, where there’s uncertainty there’s also new, untapped sources of value. That’s why the future belongs to those who can adapt best. Visit powermaps.net to learn more about this.
